At its core, constipation is merely the difficulty of having regularly occurring bowel movements. A person is considered to be clinically constipated if they are having less than three bowel movements a week.</p>
<p>Constipation is fairly frequent in people as they age, although it is natural to have a decrease in bowel movements, as you become older. If you have infrequent constipation it is not something to get too concerned about. You could be diagnosed with constipation if:</p>
<p>•	You do not eat enough fiber on a daily basis</p>
<p>•	You drink milk on a regular basis</p>
<p>•	You become dehydrated (through exercise or not drinking enough, or a combination of the two)</p>
<p>•	Ignoring the need to use the bathroom</p>
<p>•	You are pregnant</p>
<p>While there are a wide variety of reasons why people become constipated, it is not uncommon and statistics show that most people will experience constipation at some point in their lives. More then 4.5 million people experience this symptom each year, most over the age of 65 &#8211; with women making up most of the total.</p>
<p>Constipation is not a disease, as many people are led to believe, but instead a symptom of a diet lacking in essential nutrients or a non-existent exercise program (the two leading causes of constipation). <p>One of the best home remedies for constipation is to drink a cup of hot water with a fresh lemon squeezed into it when you first get up in the morning, and then go for a brisk walk. You can add sugar to the hot lemon water (for hot lemonade), and if you don’t have fresh lemons on hand, reconstituted lemon juices works just as well.</p>
<p>Many people find that substituting a glass of prune juice or a cup of strong coffee for the hot lemon water works just as well.</p>
<p>Another home remedy for constipation that is mild but effective is adding more fiber and more water to your diet. Most people need at least 25 grams of fiber per day for healthy digestion and elimination.</p>
<p>Try eating oatmeal or bran cereal with fruit for breakfast each day. Switch to whole grain bread for sandwiches (with a least 3 grams of fiber per serving), and add at least five servings of fresh fruits and vegetables and eight 8-ounce glasses of water daily.</p>
<p>Several easy-to-make drinks are popular home remedies for constipation. These include one half cup of olive oil mixed with one half cup of orange juice taken before bed, or a cup of warm milk with honey, or warm water with honey three times a day.</p>
<p>If all else fails, one or two teaspoons of aloe vera gel or castor oil taken internally will have a laxative effect and get your system started again.</p>
