What causes chronic constipation? Chronic constipation is most often the result of poor eating habits, lack of exercise, emotional stress, and a lack of a healthy morning routine. Chronic constipation can cause intense physical discomfort, including abdominal pain and bloating, indigestion, heartburn, irritability, and an overall feeling of being unwell.
Lack of adequate fiber and fluid intake is the most common cause of chronic constipation. Fast food and processed snacks are low in fiber and high in fat. Fatty low fiber foods become packed and hard in the intestines and are more difficult to eliminate. Inadequate fluid intake only makes the problem worse.
Increasing fiber intake is not as hard as it sounds. Switching to whole grain breads, cereals, and snacks and adding at least five servings per day of fresh fruits and vegetables will usually do it. Aim for 27 grams of fiber per day, and drink at least eight glasses of water each and every day to prevent chronic constipation from taking hold.
Exercise is also necessary to regular bowel function. Getting very little exercise contributes to constipation problems.
Adding exercise doesn’t have to be an ordeal though.
One effective solution is to drink a cup of hot water with lemon or a cup of strong coffee each morning and then spend ten to fifteen minutes jogging on a treadmill before breakfast. Take proper time for elimination, and try to add another fifteen-minute walk later in the day.
Finally, laxative addiction can actually make chronic constipation worse, so avoid the laxative-constipation cycle whenever possible, making sensible lifestyle changes and using laxatives only as a last resort.
